New Director!

March 6, 2007

The Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! is excited to announce that it has hired a new director! The band has been without a director since Mr. Elkus retired in 2003. After four years of searching and after interviewing several well qualified candidates, Thomas Slabaugh II was offered the position, and he accepted it with much excitement. Unlike some of the past directors, this position will be full time. He will begin work in July.

Mr. Slabaugh will complete his Doctorate in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Washington this spring. He is extremely accomplished in conducting ensembles of all ages and genres, and has been involved in a variety of musical groups, from drum corps to concert band. He has experience in pursuing fundraising and sponsorship opportunities. Also, he is experienced in working with student leaders, and has a great attitude toward the unique student run status of the Aggie Band. The band looks forward to welcoming Mr. Slabaugh into the organization!

Mr. Slabaugh's biography can be found on the "Documentation" page, or you can click on the following direct link to Mr. Slabaugh's Bio.

Informal Uniform Changes?

February 17, 2007

The Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! is considering a change to its "Mav'rik" uniform. For several years, there has been concern from both within the band and from outsiders that Mav'rik makes the band look sloppy and out-of-date. It has been decided that the white shirt is the part of the uniform that bandsmen are most willing to change, and several options have been proposed. One option is to replace the white shirts with white track jackets. Another is to replace the oversized white shirts that bandsmen purchase themselves with a uniform, fitted white shirt. The third option is to enforce current policy more strictly and make sure that all white shirts are tucked or buttoned neatly, instead of tied at the waist or untucked. Many bandsmen and alumni have expressed concern at the thought of change, as the white shirt is the only remaining item from the original Mav'rik uniform that was adopted in 1963. However, others have expressed the thought that if change is to take place, the current transition period to NCAA Division I would be an appropriate time for it to happen. No decision regarding this change has yet been made, and it has been suggested that the band bring the matter to a vote at Elections, which will be taking place on Monday, April 30, 2007. If you would like to comment on this issue, please email the Officer Council at ossifers AT camb DOT ucdavis DOT edu.

Football Season

December 3, 2006

The Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! had another successful football season! The Band continued its tradition of attending all UC Davis football games, home AND away. This year, this meant traveling to San Luis Obispo, Colorado, Texas, Montana, Ohio, and South Dakota to support the Aggies and having many adventures along the way. The Band-uh! is proud to have cheered on UC Davis football to its 37th consecutive winning season. Go Ags!

Fall Retreat

December 3, 2006

This year, the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! held its annual retreat from September 18 to September 21. As always, the purpose of retreat was to introduce the freshmen to marching, playing their instrument (if needed), and to lots of new friends! Now that the band has lots of excited and dedicated freshmen, the Band knows that retreat was truly a success.

Make sure to bring your friends and family downtown for this event, for it will surely be a day of music-filled fun!!!

Elections

April 26, 2006

The Band will be holding their annual elections on May 15th to elect new officers for 2007. The member elected will then take over their office at the conclusion of football season next fall.

Picnic Day!

April 22, 2006

Picnic Day was held on April 22nd this year, and the band was EXTREMELY happy with the fact that it was cloudy, yet dry! The band put on an awesome long show in front of Wickson Hall, featuring Fanfare 2006, "Ecstasy of Gold," "Don't Tell Me You Love Me," "The Kids Aren't Alright," "Spiderwebs," an awesome sung rendition of the "Alma Mater" and ending with "Aggie Fight." They performed four short shows throughout campus and downtown, and then sprinted to change into their "Mav'rick" uniforms and marched the entire parade again!!! However, the day had only just begun for the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! The infamous "Battle of the Bands" soon followed the parade, and there was quite a turnout from other bands around the state. Participants included Stanford, Humboldt, UCSD, UCI and UC Berkeley. This year, the Battle lasted over 9 hours! The Cal Aggie Band concluded the Battle by playing "Aggie Fight" at 11:30 on the dot! What a day! Even though it was tiring, band members were very satisfied with how everything turned out. If you didn't make it out to see the band play on Picnic Day this year, they hope to see you all next time!

The dates for this year's ski rallies are January 29th at Sugar Bowl, February 19th at Northstar and February 26th at Squaw Valley.

Upcoming Basketball Trip

January 8, 2006

From February 2nd to Febraury 5th, you won't find the California Aggie Marching Band-uh! in Davis! They will be soaking up the sun, and having some fun down in southern California! Along with playing at both the Cal Poly and Santa Barbara basketball games, the band is going to Knott's Berry Farm! There, they will amuse the amusement park-goers by doing the occasional parade through the park, and entertaining people while they stand in line. Fun stuff!

Chinese New Year Parade

January 8, 2006

On February 11th, the California Aggie Marching Band-uh! will be struttin' their stuff in San Francisco as they march through town in the annual Chinese New Year Parade!
